Southern Regional Medical Center, a member of the Prime Healthcare Foundation, has opened their Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (IRU) in its quest to expand its complement of rehabilitation services offered to their communities. The unit strives to help individuals function as independently as possible after suffering a major health event.

“Our IRU has had a long history of offering exceptional care to patients recovering from serious illnesses or injuries such as a stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopedic injury, neurological conditions, or other trauma that requires extensive rehabilitation care,” said Janie Hinton, CNO. “We are truly pleased to once again offer our patients advanced rehabilitation services in their own community.”

The inpatient rehabilitation care team develops an individual treatment plan for each patient requiring a higher level of care. With inpatient rehabilitation, patients usually go home sooner, have greater success walking independently again, and have a lower rate of readmission to the hospital during or after treatment.

Southern Regional has continually offered extensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Services that include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, cardio-pulmonary therapy (certified by AACVPR – American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation), neurological and cognitive therapy, and sports medicine rehabilitation. Most recently, Outpatient Rehabilitation added Pediatric Rehabilitation Services to their offerings to provide comprehensive rehabilitation for children (newborn to age 12). The hospital’s Outpatient Rehabilitation also offers special clinics that meet the needs of the communities the hospital serves.
