Calcium Scoring

Calcium Scoring at Southern Regional is performed through a simple, non-invasive CT scan using our technologically advanced 64-slice CT scanner. Patients lie on a motorized bed while sensitive X-ray equipment moves around them. Special computer software accelerates the imaging, visually “freezing” the motion of the heart to obtain information. By interpreting this imagery, doctors are able to determine how much calcium is present in the arteries, and where the deposits are located. That information is scored, ranging from zero (which is normal) to several hundred.

If you’re at risk for heart disease, finding out your coronary calcium score lets you and your doctor know the amount of calcium deposits you have in the arteries of your heart. The more calcium deposits you have, the more plaque – and too much plaque can reduce or cut off the flow of blood and oxygen. This, in fact, is the most common form of heart disease.

Is Calcium Scoring for You?

Coronary calcium scoring isn’t for everyone. Certain traits, conditions, or habits may raise your chance of developing CAD:

  • Men over 45 and Women over 55
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Family history of heart disease
  • Diabetes and Obesity
  • Cigarette smoking

People who are considered at low risk generally won’t benefit from this test, since there is just a slight statistical chance a significant amount of coronary calcium will be found. Likewise, individuals who are already being treated for heart disease would most likely find the test unnecessary.

Coronary calcium scoring is most helpful for those at intermediate risk. According to the American Heart Association, almost half of all heart-related deaths occur in people with no previous history of heart disease symptoms. Coronary calcium scoring can identify those people who need treatment and act as a catalyst for adopting a healthier lifestyle.
