Southern Regional Medical Center has ventured into a new partnership with Dispensary of Hope, a nonprofit organization that provides medication to qualified, low-income and uninsured patients. Through this partnership, Southern Regional has become a Dispensary of Hope Dispensing Site, aligning with the hospital’s mission to provide patients with economic challenges the critical medications they need.

“We are pleased to collaborate and partner with Dispensary of Hope on this important effort as we strive to assure that qualified patients in our community have access to the medications, they need to continue on their path to getting well,” said Darra Edwards, Director of Pharmacy at Southern Regional Medical Center. “Through this initiative, our hospital continues on our quest to close the healthcare disparity gap and to make our communities healthier.”

The Dispensary of Hope program is key to reducing avoidable hospital readmissions and emergency room use that often results from lack of access to affordable medication. The program is championed by the hospital’s Pharmacy Department and has already started providing this service to eligible patients who have received specific medications free of charge.

A collaborative network of medication donor manufacturers, dispensing clinics, pharmacies, health systems and partner organizations, The Dispensary of Hope collects and distributes pharmaceuticals to pharmacies and safety-net clinics, which then dispense the medications to low income, chronically ill patients. There is an annual subscription fee to become a partner within this initiative.
