Hospital and EMS partnership introduces lifesaving whole blood transfusions, expanding access for trauma and bleeding patients across the region.
(Riverdale, GA – September 30, 2025) – Southern Regional Medical Center, a member of Prime Healthcare Foundation, is partnering with Clayton County Fire Rescue to introduce “Low Titer O+ Whole Blood” (LTOWB), an all-in-one blood product that combines red blood cells, plasma, and platelets. This advancement allows transfusions to begin sooner, supporting patients with severe bleeding during critical emergencies.
Southern Regional is the first hospital in Clayton County and only the third in Georgia to launch this program. Its design and implementation expand access to lifesaving emergency care closer to home, while reflecting a broader national trend as hospitals reintroducing whole blood transfusions in trauma and emergency care to improve survival rates.
Unlike traditional donations that are separated into components, LTOWB delivers a balanced ratio of red blood cells, plasma, and platelets in a single unit. This makes it especially valuable for patients experiencing rapid blood loss. With this partnership, paramedics can begin transfusions in the field or enroute, giving patients critical support when every second counts.
“The use of Low Titer O+ Whole Blood has shown promising outcomes in patients experiencing massive bleeding,” said Ela C. Lena, CEO of Southern Regional Medical Center. “Whole blood has unique advantages, especially when rapid replacement is needed for trauma, surgery, or other medical emergencies.”
“Southern Regional Medical Center has shown immense commitment to advancing the quality of patient care through this partnership,” added Doral Moore, Director of Laboratory Services. “This initiative underscores the importance of collaboration and community partnerships to improve outcomes for local residents.”
Ms. Lena concluded, “By bringing whole blood to Clayton County, we are strengthening emergency preparedness and ensuring patients in critical need have access to lifesaving care when it matters most. This is the beginning of a program that will continue to grow as we train, expand, and build on our commitment to patients and the community.”
