Some common Sleep Disorders include:
- Insomnia – Difficulty falling asleep is only one of the symptoms of insomnia. Other symptoms include waking up too early and not being able to fall back asleep, frequent awakenings and waking up feeling un-refreshed.
- Narcolepsy – falling asleep uncontrollably. Patients with narcolepsy also experience excessive sleepiness and “sleep attacks” characterized by sleep paralysis, hallucination and sudden loss of muscle control. These can happen at any time of the day, in all types of situations-regardless of the amount or quality of sleep they’ve had the night before. There is currently no cure for narcolepsy exists but its symptoms can be controlled through medications and lifestyle modifications.
- Restless legs syndrome (RLS) – Uncomfortable leg sensations that occur while the body is at rest. These can include: the urge to move the legs, tossing and turning in bed, a worsening of discomfort late in the day or when lying down, sleep disruptions and daytime fatigue. Affecting an estimated 4 million American adults, RLS may be a central nervous system disorder and occasionally is associated with iron-deficiency anemia, pregnancy or diabetes.
- Sleep apnea – When you to stop breathing during sleep. It can happen hundreds of times during a night, often for a minute or longer. This can raise your risk for high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke. In fact, research indicates that more than 38,000 cardiovascular deaths can be attributed to sleep apnea each year. Sleep apnea can also cause excessive sleepiness, depression, irritability, sexual dysfunction and learning and memory difficulties.
- Snoring – Noisy breathing during sleep. It is a common problem among all ages and both genders, and it affects about 90 million American adults, according to the National Sleep Foundation.
People who have blockage in their breathing more than 15 times per hour of sleep are at a higher risk of:
- Heart attacks
- Heart failure
- Heart rhythm problems
- Strokes
- Sleepiness
