Southern Regional’s Rehabilitation Services has added a comprehensive Outpatient Pediatric Rehab for newborns to children age 12 at the main hospital in Riverdale. This new program provides a much-needed service to the southern crescent of metro Atlanta. Additionally, for those children who need to continue rehabilitation through adulthood, it provides a seamless transition to our adult rehabilitation services.

“Our rehabilitation team has provided the assessment and rehabilitation plan for newborns in our Neonatal Intensive Care and Mother/Baby Units. Now we will be providing that ongoing, individualized rehab care for those babies and for all the children in the communities we serve who have to travel to receive the specialized care they need,” stated Tamala Harris, Director of Rehabilitation Services.  Adding, “Our program focuses on providing every child the opportunity to grow, flourish, play, and enjoy independence.”

Southern Regional’s Outpatient Pediatric Rehabilitation services offers physical therapy, speech-language pathology, and occupational therapy. Each component evaluates and treats a specific entity:

  • Physical therapy focuses on building gross motor skills development; gait analysis and mobility training; balance and coordination training; rehabilitation of sports injuries; and motor planning.
  • Speech-Language Pathology focuses on articulation through words and sentences, feeding, chewing, and swallowing skills; language comprehension and cognitive development; reading and phonics; social skills, play and interactions; and voice and vocal cord dysfunction.
  • Occupational Therapy is designed to enhance fine motor strengthening and coordination; self-care skills: dressing, feeding, and grooming; sensory processing and modulation; visual-motor development; motor planning; and adaptive play

The family-friendly Pediatric Outpatient Rehabilitation Center is conveniently located within the main hospital. It’s handicapped accessible with free parking in front of the hospital – it’s easy access for the entire family.
