The Children's Program is the only mental health program in the
Southern Crescent to provide inpatient psychiatric services for
children between the ages of 6 and 12. Board Certified psychiatrists
and a host of clinicians and nurses are specially trained to provide
care to the children referred to this program.
Children in the program participate in a daily treatment schedule,
which includes group therapy, recreational therapy and educational
instruction with a certified teacher. Several psycho-educational
groups are also rotated into the daily schedule such as a feeling
identification group, a self-esteem group, a chemical dependency
group, a problem solving group and an anger management group.
Family involvement is crucial to a successful treatment outcome.
Therefore, parents attend family therapy sessions and parenting
education groups throughout the child's length of stay.
Common behaviors exhibited by children who are appropriate for referral
to The Children's Program are:
- increased irritability
- decreased interest in usual activities
- increased isolation; withdrawn from others
- a decline in school performance
- drastic change in mood
- overly fearful or anxious
- inattentive to tasks or play activities
- restless, fidgety or overactive
- temper outbursts or exhibiting aggressive behavior
- verbalize wanting to be dead
- any other unusual behavior which has evoked concern from
parents, teachers or others
